To keep track of up-to-the-minute transportation schedules, travelers and commuters in the entire Belgian province of Antwerp rely on scanning a dynamic QR code to see when their next bus or tram will arrive. The test, which installed 350 QR codes in stations and stops, has shown that there’s a high usage of the technology.
According to the transport company, De Lijn, over 5,000 travelers used the two-dimensional barcode in the first couple of weeks, which riders can scan with the camera of their smartphone, allowing them instantly look up when the next tram or bus will arrive.
Fast Acceptance of QR Codes
[pullquote]“In May, the QR codes were used 3,510 times. In June usage rose to 4,956, or 41% more scans. The number of users continues to grow,”[/pullquote] according to director Tom A. Meeuws.
In July, almost 10,900 scans were provisionally tracked. An external survey has shown that there is a need for real-time bus stop information, reports De Lijn. The full rollout of this service based on the QR code follows the successful completion of a trial project, installing QR codes in 6,000 locations. Plans are now in place to expand the QR code installations in the province of Flanders, as well as other provinces in Belgium.
