Antwerp Adopts uQR.me Dynamic QR codes for Belgian Transportation

To keep track of up-to-the-minute transportation schedules, travelers and commuters in the entire Belgian province of Antwerp rely on scanning a dynamic QR code to see when their next bus or tram will arrive. The test, which installed 350 QR codes in stations and stops, has shown that there’s a high usage of the technology.

According to the transport company, De Lijn, over 5,000 travelers used the two-dimensional barcode in the first couple of weeks, which riders can scan with the camera of their smartphone, allowing them instantly look up when the next tram or bus will arrive.

Fast Acceptance of QR Codes

[pullquote]“In May, the QR codes were used 3,510 times. In June usage rose to 4,956, or 41% more scans. The number of users continues to grow,”[/pullquote] according to director Tom A. Meeuws.

In July, almost 10,900 scans were provisionally tracked. An external survey has shown that there is a need for real-time bus stop information, reports De Lijn. The full rollout of this service based on the QR code follows the successful completion of a trial project, installing QR codes in 6,000 locations. Plans are now in place to expand the QR code installations in the province of Flanders, as well as other provinces in Belgium.

The dynamic QR codes, generated by uQR.me, will change how transportation companies relay information to their customers in real-time, along with saving money on equipment and outdated methods of tracking arrival times, as well as other services.

As reported in QRcodePress,
[pullquote]“beyond QR codes, many public transportation systems around the world are now taking advantage of the common nature of smartphones and other mobile devices in order to use them for informing consumers, for mobile payments, and even as a form of digital ticketing. This is helping them to be able to increase the cashless nature of their service as well as to allow consumers to take advantage of their favorite devices in more parts of their daily lives.”[/pullquote]

Diego Gopen, CEO at uQR.me, is very excited that his company was an integral part of this massive use of QR codes via his company.
[pullquote]“We are really proud to help support Antwerp’s project with our dynamic QR codes, in their evolution to become a tech-smarter city, and will be here for other cities and nations that wish to make QR codes part of their customer-based systems, whether it’s for transportation, or other important information retrieval.”[/pullquote]

Information with Minimal Cost

While many transportation systems around the world rely on expensive electronic digital displays that must be serviced for upkeep, along with support staff, maintenance personnel, as well as time-drag on displaying the information, the QR codes are computer driven and available to minimal operating costs. It’s only a matter of time before other countries follow Belgium’s lead with this technology.
